The RNG
Modern slot machines are computerized. The odds are programmed. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever are present for historical and entertainment reasons only. It is a Random Number Generator that chooses the reels positions. The machine's software includes a Random Number Generator.
The RNG is constantly generating random numbers at an extremely high rate. When a player presses the Play button the most recent random number determines the result. This means that the result varies depending on exactly when the game is played. A fraction of a second earlier or later, and the result would be different.
The RNG was noticed to generate not exactly random numbers. Indeed, most RNGs will eventually repeat their number sequence. The cause of it is in poor programming. It is relatively easy to build pseudo RNGs with very long periods. The computer that is able to complete a single period in the expected lifetime of the universe hasn't been invented yet. Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, was the only one who had access to the pseudo RNG code and seed values. Specific gambling games equations were discovered by him. The fact that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played was revealed. But the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So the numbers can't be exactly found in a sequence.

Percentage Of The Payout
The percentage of winnings paid out of the money that is wagered by players is 82–98 per cent. This is known as the theoretical payout percentage. The minimum theoretical payout percentage is controlled by jurisdictions. Law or regulation are used to establish it. A certain winning pattern is determined by every casino individually. This is the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. The winning patterns on slot machines are carefully selected to yield a certain fraction of the money played to the house. The rest of the money is given back to the players.
A slot machine's theoretical payout percentage is set at the factory when the software is written. Changing the payout percentage requires a physical swap of the software. Being a time-consuming process it is done not very often. One can find a tamper-evident seal on the EPROM in certain jurisdictions. Gaming Control Board officials should be called for changing it. According to other jurisdictions slot machines are randomly audited to ensure that they contain only approved software.
Thanks to the newly developed technology the game, the odds, and the payouts would be able to be changed by the casino's slot manager remotely. The change can be done only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes. After making the change the machine is locked to new players for four minutes, it displays an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made.

Linked Machines
Offering of a particularly large prize, or jackpot becomes possible when a group of machines is linked in a special way. A small amount is contributed by each machine in the group to this progressive jackpot which is given to a player who gets a specific combination of symbols. A single slot machine's jackpot is considerably less than the progressive jackpot.
In some cases multiple machines are linked across multiple casinos. In these cases the manufacturer owning these machines is responsible for paying the jackpot.

Near-miss
Computer software controls the reel display of modern slot machines. That is why the slot machine can be programmed to display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
This practice is called near-miss programming.
This term is also used for a related phenomenon. The chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line is controlled by the winning percentages programmed into the slot machine. However, the combinations appearing above and below the pay line are all roughly equally randomly distributed. There are roughly equally randomly distributed combinations above and below the pay line. This phenomenon only occurs where abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. In video slot machines the symbols that appear around the winning line are usually an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The Nevada Gaming Commission investigated the issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line. They ruled that this was legal, so long as the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed. In other words, the near-miss must be just as likely to occur as any other combination. It is impossible to program the machine to show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
Australia also forbids to use near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed. Stop motion cameras are used by regulators for manufacturer's practices audit.

Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes considered to be cheating devices and other scams.
Modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips and coin acceptors were changed for bill acceptors. Different advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures have been taken to make it difficult to defraud these machines. Nowadays microwaves are used to defraud slot machines.

Slots are very easy to play. Slots give you an opportunity to win a lot of money. All slots work with the help of RNG. RNG is a Random Number Generator. RNG is a microchip, which is constantly churning out thousands of numbers a second. RNG churns the numbers even if nobody plays. When you hit a spin the machine takes the next number out which it then translates into the position which the reels should stop at, and whether you have won or not! Before playing you have to decide how many coins for each go you want to play. If you have enough money or credits you’d better make maximum bets. Maximum bets give you an opportunity to get the maximum payout, which for some slots is the jackpot. The type of the slot machine determines the payout.

The first gambling machine, on which all modern slots are based, was invented by Charles Fey in 1887. Instead of symbols we have now there were regular playing card symbols. The gambling machine consisted of three mechanical reels and a lever. The lever had to be pulled to make the reels move. It was Charles Fey who offered the first slot machine to the public. The first slot consisted of three mechanically spinning reels. There were ten pictures (cards) on each reel. If three equal pictures came out at the same time it was a win. In 1889 there appeared slots, which gave an opportunity to win the jackpot. Fey’s first slot machine was called the Liberty Bell. Then slots were played mostly by women. Women played slots while their men gambled. For some time gambling was forbidden. There appeared so-called “Liberty Bell Gum Fruit” slots. People used “Liberty Bell Gum Fruit” for buying a bubble gum and with the bubble gum they got an opportunity to win money, they were given a spin. Pictures of different fruits were used as the symbols. At the end of the 20th century computerized slots and video poker machines appeared. Modern slots are much easier to use. Gamblers push the button and the game starts. Nowadays gamblers can play slots at the comfort of their home.

There are many types of slot machine configurations but all work according to the same principles - put the money in the slots and pull the handle! According to the main slot classification there are two types of slots. They are straight slots and progressive slots. The main principle of the straight slots is that you get paid according to the schedule listed on the machine itself. Inside the straight slot group four more types are distinguished. They are multiplier, bonus multiplier, multiple payline and buy-a-pay slots. The main feature of multiplier slots is that the payout for a winning combination depends on the number of coins bet. The main feature of the bonus multiplier slots is a bonus round, which is activated if you make maximum bets. When playing multiple payline slots remember that the number of coins being bet determines the winning amount. The Buy-a-Pay slots are profitable only if you place maximum bets. Progressive slots are characterized by the big jackpot, which progressively gets larger and larger, as every coin is put in. The amount of the Progressive jackpot is always shown on the slot.
