The RNG
Modern slot machines are computerized. So the odds are whatever they are programmed to be. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever exist only for historical and entertainment reasons. The positions of the reels depend on a Random Number Generator. The machine's software contains it.
Random numbers are constantly generated by the RNG at an extremely high rate. When you pres the Play button the result is determined by the most recent random number. The result varies depending on exactly when the game is played. A fraction of a second earlier or later, and the result would be different.
It was noticed that the RNG does not actually generate random numbers. It turned out that The number sequence is repeated time after time. This behavior is due to poor programming. To build pseudo RNGs with very long periods is relatively easy. No computer can complete a single period in the expected lifetime of the universe. Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, had access to the pseudo RNG code and seed values. Equations for specific gambling games like Keno were discovered by him. They allowed to predict that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played. But the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So the player cannot tell where in the sequence they are.

Payout Percentage
The percentage of winnings paid out of the money that is wagered by players is 82–98 per cent. The term theoretical payout percentage is used to denote it. Jurisdictions serve to control the minimum theoretical payout percentage. Law or regulation are used to establish it. Nearly each casino has its own winning pattern. It concerns the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. The winning patterns on slot machines are carefully selected to yield a certain fraction of the money played to the house. The players get the rest of the money.
A slot machine's theoretical payout percentage is set at the factory when the software is written. Physical swap of the software is needed for changing the payout percentage after a slot machine has been placed on the gaming floor. Based on current technology, this is a time-consuming process and as such is done infrequently. In certain jurisdictions the EPROM has a tamper-evident seal. Gaming Control Board officials should be called for changing it. Other jurisdictions randomly audit slot machines to ensure that they contain only approved software.
The technology being developed by the Nevada Gaming Commission would allow the casino's slot manager to change the game, the odds, and the payouts remotely. Only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes can the change be done. After the change is made, the machine must be locked to new players for four minutes and display an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made.

Linked Machines
Linking the machines in a special way is made to offer a particularly large prize, or jackpot. Each slot machine in the group contributes a small amount to this progressive jackpot, awarded to a player who gets a specific combination of symbols. The amount paid for the progressive jackpot is usually far higher than any single slot machine could pay on its own.
Multiple machines can be sometimes linked across multiple casinos. The machines are then owned by the manufacturer, who is responsible for paying the jackpot.

Near-miss Programming
The reel display of modern slot machines is controlled by computer software. It is possible to make the slot machine frequently display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
This practice is called near-miss programming.
A related phenomenon is sometimes called near-miss. It is winning percentages that control the chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line. However, the combinations appearing above and below the pay line are all roughly equally randomly distributed. There are roughly equally randomly distributed combinations above and below the pay line. The occurance of this phenomenon is possible when abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. In video slot machines the symbols that appear around the winning line are usually an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line was also the subject of the Nevada Gaming Commission investigation. So long as the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed it was recognized legal. That means that the possibility of near-miss occurrence should be equal to the possibility of any other combination. The machine cannot be specially programmed to show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
Australia also forbids to use near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed. To audit manufacturer's practices regulators use stop motion cameras.

Slots Fraud
Sometimes mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors seem to belong to cheating devices and other scams.
EPROM computer chips controls modern slot machines and coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors. It is difficult to defraud these machines because they their bill acceptors are designed with advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures. An example of modern ways of slot machine defrauding is directing microwaves toward it to disrupt its proper functioning.

It doesn’t require much skill to play slots. With slots you can win a lot of money. The work of all slots is provided by RNG. RNG is a Random Number Generator. RNG is a microchip, which is constantly churning out thousands of numbers a second. RNG churns the numbers even if nobody plays. When you hit a spin the machine takes the next number out which it then translates into the position which the reels should stop at, and whether you have won or not! Make out for yourself how much you can afford to spend for one go. If you have enough money or credits you’d better make maximum bets. Maximum bets give you an opportunity to get the maximum payout, which for some slots is the jackpot. The payout is different for different gambling machines.

The first gambling machine, on which all modern slots are based, was invented by Charles Fey in 1887. Then not symbols, but cards were used. There were three mechanical reels and the lever, which had to be pulled to make the reels move. It was Charles Fey who offered the first slot machine to the public. The first slot consisted of three mechanically spinning reels. Every reel had ten sections with different pictures on them. The player won if three equal cards came out. In 1889 there appeared slots, which gave an opportunity to win the jackpot. Fey’s first slot machine was called the Liberty Bell. Then slots were played mostly by women. Women played slots while their men gambled. There was a period of time when any kind of gambling was forbidden. The reaction was the appearance of “Liberty Bell Gum Fruit” slots. People used “Liberty Bell Gum Fruit” for buying a bubble gum and with the bubble gum they got an opportunity to win money, they were given a spin. The symbols were different fruits, the most popular tastes of a chewing gum. At the end of the 20th century computerized slots and video poker machines appeared. Modern slots are much easier to use. Gamblers push the button and the game starts. Nowadays gamblers can play slots at the comfort of their home.

There are many types of slot machine configurations but all work according to the same principles - put the money in the slots and pull the handle! Traditionally two main types of slots are distinguished: straight and progressive slots. The main principle of the straight slots is that you get paid according to the schedule listed on the machine itself. There are four other types inside of the straight slot group: multiplier, bonus multiplier, multiple payline and buy-a-pay slots. The main feature of multiplier slots is that the payout for a winning combination depends on the number of coins bet. The main principle of bonus multiplier slots is a bonus round, which becomes active if you play with maximum bets. When playing multiple payline slots remember that the number of coins being bet determines the winning amount. The Buy-a-Pay slots are profitable only if you place maximum bets. Progressive slots are characterized by the big jackpot, which progressively gets larger and larger, as every coin is put in. The jackpot total is posted above the machine and can grow to enormous sums of money.
