Random Number Generator
There are many modern computerized slot machines. So the odds are whatever they are programmed to be. In modern slot machines, the reels and lever exist only for historical and entertainment reasons. It is a Random Number Generator that chooses the reels positions. It is included into the machine's software.
The rate of generating random numbers by the RNG is extremely high. As soon as the Play button is pressed, the most recent random number is used to determine the result. This means that the result varies depending on exactly when the game is played. A fraction of a second earlier or later, and the result would be different.
The RNG was noticed to generate not exactly random numbers. The sequence of numbers is repeated by most of the RNGs. Poor programming is its reason. It is relatively easy to build pseudo RNGs with very long periods. There is no computer that is able to complete a single period in the expected lifetime of the universe. It was Ronald Dale Harris, a former slot machine programmer, who knew the pseudo RNG code and seed values. He discovered equations for specific gambling games like Keno. Then the prediction was made that the next set of selected numbers would be based on the previous games played. But the RNG picks numbers even when the machine is not being played. So the player cannot see the secquence.

Payout Percentage
Slot machines are typically programmed to pay out as winnings 82–98 per cent of the money that is wagered by players. The term theoretical payout percentage is used to denote it. The minimum theoretical payout percentage varies among jurisdictions. It is typically established by law or regulation. Nearly each casino has its own winning pattern. It concerns the amounts they pay and the frequencies of these pay-outs. The main criterion for selecting the winning patterns on slot machines is that they should yield a certain fraction of the money played to the house. The rest of the money goes to the players.
When a slot machine's software is written its theoretical payout percentage is also set. Changing the payout percentage after a slot machine has been placed on the gaming floor requires a physical swap of the software. Being a time-consuming process it is done not very often. In certain jurisdictions the EPROM has a tamper-evident seal. Only Gaming Control Board officials can change it. According to other jurisdictions slot machines are randomly audited to ensure that they contain only approved software.
The technology being developed by the Nevada Gaming Commission would allow the casino's slot manager to change the game, the odds, and the payouts remotely. Only after the selected machine has been idle for at least four minutes can the change be done. After making the change the machine is locked to new players for four minutes, it displays an on-screen message informing potential players that a change is being made.

Linked Machines
A group of machines offers a particularly large prize, or jackpot if they are linked together in a special way. If a player gets a specific combination of symbols the progressive jackpot from this group of machines is given to him. The amount of the progressive jackpot is far higher than any single slot machine's.
Sometimes multiple machines form multiple casinos. The machines are then owned by the manufacturer, who is responsible for paying the jackpot.

Near-miss
Computer software controls the reel display of modern slot machines. It is possible to make the slot machine frequently display combinations that are close to winning combinations.
This practice is called near-miss programming.
There is a related phenomenon that is also sometimes called near-miss. The chance of a winning combination appearing on a pay line is controlled by the winning percentages programmed into the slot machine. However, the combinations appearing above and below the pay line are all roughly equally randomly distributed. There are roughly equally randomly distributed combinations above and below the pay line. This occurs if abbreviated physical reels are used to display a win pattern based upon the RNG. In video slot machines the symbols that appear around the winning line are usually an accurate depiction of how the reels were mathematically modeled.
The issue of a near-miss above or below the pay line was also investigated by the Nevada Gaming Commission. It was considered to be legal as long as the near-miss above or below the pay line was not specially programmed. The near-miss and any other combination should have the same possibility of occurrence. The machine can't show winning combinations more frequently than other combinations above or below the pay line.
In Australia the usage of near-miss programming, where a near miss is inaccurately displayed is also illegal. Manufacturer's practices are audited by regulators with the help of stop motion cameras.

Slots Fraud
Mechanical slot machines and their coin acceptors were sometimes considered to be cheating devices and other scams.
Modern slot machines are controlled by EPROM computer chips and coin acceptors have become obsolete in favor of bill acceptors. It is difficult to defraud these machines because they their bill acceptors are designed with advanced anti-cheating and anti-counterfeiting measures. An example of modern ways of slot machine defrauding is directing microwaves toward it to disrupt its proper functioning.

It doesn’t require much skill to play slots. Slots give you an opportunity to win a lot of money. All slots work with the help of RNG. RNG is a Random Number Generator. RNG is a microchip, which is constantly churning out thousands of numbers a second. RNG churns the numbers even if nobody plays. When you hit a spin the machine takes the next number out which it then translates into the position which the reels should stop at, and whether you have won or not! Decide how much money or coins you can spend for one go and only then begin to play. If you have enough money or credits you’d better make maximum bets. If you make maximum bets you have an opportunity to get the maximum win, which for some slots is the Progressive Jackpot. The payout depends on the type of a slot machine.

The first gambling machine, on which all modern slots are based, was invented by Charles Fey in 1887. Instead of symbols we have now there were regular playing card symbols. The gambling machine consisted of three mechanical reels and a lever. The lever had to be pulled to make the reels move. It was Charles Fey who offered the first slot machine to the public. The first slot consisted of three mechanically spinning reels. There were ten pictures (cards) on each reel. The player won if three equal cards came out. In 1889 there appeared slots, which gave an opportunity to win the jackpot. Fey’s first slot machine was called the Liberty Bell. The slots were used as an entertainment mostly for ladies. Women played slots while their men gambled. Later gambling was forbidden for some time. The reaction was the appearance of “Liberty Bell Gum Fruit” slots. With “Liberty Bell Gum Fruit” people could buy a chewing gum and as a bonus they got an opportunity to have a spin. The symbols were different fruits, the most popular tastes of a chewing gum. At the end of the 20th century computerized slots and video poker machines appeared. Modern slots are much easier to use. Gamblers push the button and the game starts. Nowadays gamblers can play slots at the comfort of their home.

All slots work according to one and the same rule. You put coins or money in the slot machine and then pull the handle. According to the main slot classification there are two types of slots. They are straight slots and progressive slots. The main feature, which distinguishes straight slots from other types is that you get paid according to the payout table, which is shown on the slot machine. There are four other types inside of the straight slot group: multiplier, bonus multiplier, multiple payline and buy-a-pay slots. The bet amount determines the sum of the payout in multiplier slots. The main principle of bonus multiplier slots is a bonus round, which becomes active if you play with maximum bets. The feature of multiple payline slots is that the number of active payline is dependent on the number of coins being bet. The Buy-a-Pay slots are profitable only if you place maximum bets. The jackpot for Progressive slots is never the same as it grows higher with every coin put in the machine. You can see the sum of the jackpot above the slot machine and it can be huge.
